"At the time I was developing a new painting project and something was missing in the plan. One day while gardening I saw Healey sunbathing between me and the stone Buddha, our garden gnome. Text to accompany picture:

The sun and the moon ever give light to earth.

The seasons take their turn, the lands flourish.

Wise men follow Nature’s rhythm

to realize civilization.

(The Five Classics)

If I do not seek wealth and fame,

Why should I worry about gains and temptations?

If I do not climb the road

to high positions and great rewards,

Why should I fear the vicissitudes and dangers

                  of public life?

(Hung Ying-Ming)

Sitting in solitude, no words, my ten thousand worries

Float away with the water.

Far away from home, full of longings,

My heart flies side by side with the clouds.

(Chinese couplet)

Peony

by Liu Yuxi

The hibiscus in the garden

is showy and lacking in charm.

The lotus in the pond

is tranquil but lacking in vigour.

Only the peony is truly magnificent.

When it blooms

the whole city goes wild.

Liu Yuxi (772 – 842) a poet of the Tang Dynasty, famous for his lucid and succinct prose.
